You're sure to get some advice. Good luck with it.

BC and reg selection will, in part, be based on what kind of diving you intend to do, or aspire to do in the future.

If you primarily want to do recreational diving, close to home and/or in vacation destinations, then select equipment that can be serviced and maintained by one of your local dive shops. If you buy it from your local dive shop rather than online, you may pay more up front. But, if you intend to keep it for three or four years, the costs might amortize out to be the same or even less expensive. Patronizing your local dive shop can pay benefits in numerous small ways - but they add up.

If you aspire to eventually do technical diving, gear selection falls into different categories. You'll no doubt hear all about them shortly. Generally speaking, however, you'll want to buy a backplate and wing assembly. Some of the more popular names include Halcyon, Dive Rite, OMS, Oxycheq, and Abyss. In terms of regulators, many technical divers prefer Apex or ScubaPro. While there are many others equally well-suited, its tough to go wrong with either of these.

No matter what regs you choose, they are life support items and should be maintained regularly. The same caveat applies, then, that if you buy them locally you'll have better luck having them serviced and maintained locally.

Decide what sort of diving you intend to do over the next 12-24 months, and go from there. Best of luck.
