I'm at 3k for equip and have pretty much everything I'll ever need. After classes it'll be around 4-5. Then As grateful said, the most money being spent is on the atual diving.

Anyway, the BP/W is a great purchase to start off with.

You are fortunate. I currently own about $30K worth of gear, and I'm fairly certain I don't have everything I'll ever need yet ...

Bob, you're at it again...

Adding up the cost of your gear is like weighing your doubles rig, there are just some things you should never do!

Of course it helps that most spread that cost over several years (decades) of diving. A little here, a little there (the big expense every couple of years...), it all adds up. Once you have a few BCs, a handful of regs, various exposure protection (with assorted undergarments), not to mention tanks...DO NOT LOOK AT THE TALLY SHEET!!! :shakehead:

Bob once defined an avid diver as someone for whom the value of the dive gear in the garage exceeds the value of the car that now lives in the driveway . . . And that describes him to a T!

Not only do I not EVER want to add up how much we have spent on dive gear, these days I'm afraid even to inventory it.

To the OP.

I'd buy some used stuff, maybe a new mask/reg. A BP/W is a nice setup, but hardly *required* for the type of diving you will be doing for a good while.

I started with a used Ranger (Zeagle) and Zeagle makes great stuff. For the $200 I paid, I not only dove with it for over a year (now diving a Zeagle Stiletto AND BP/W), but I think I sold it for $250! :D

IMO while scuba equipment needs to work properly, there are a TON of folks who get certified, buy gear, do one trip, and then don't dive, and sell all their almost new stuff.

Don't get too caught up in gear just yet, rather, get caught up in diving/training.

Since you are in Sandy go check out the guys at Dive Addicts. They are awesome and will help you with selecting the right gear for you especially if you are thinking of going the tech route later on. They carry rec/tech/rebreather gear and they have the best store in Utah.. I haven't taken any classes from them, but I have purchased alot of my gear from them since the LDS is anti-tech.

Check them out you won't be disappointed.
