We are looking into going to Grand Cayman the week before Christmas for 5 nights. What are the water conditions for that time of year? Temp and recommended wetsuit. Are alot of dives wiped out due to weather and is beach diving still possible along south shore and West Bay areas? Thanks.

This is the best time of year here. Water 80F +. No suit needed or a skin. Yes - shore diving should be fine.

Our experience in diving GC during dec and jan is that the water temp is still around 80 or so (can't recall it slipping below 80). THe odds of getting to North Wall sites are not as good as in August/September, but its not out of the question by any means. The shore diving at Turtle Reef is super year round!!

I went diving in GC in December with Divetech a year ago, and I didn't need a wetsuit. Im a snowbird and I thought the water was wonderful. And I also agree that Turtle Reef was great. You didn't say where you will be staying ,however you could always check out www.divetech.com they have a super website. Plus they can always answer many questions. Have fun. Turtle gal

Generally speaking the winds are out of the North east in December which means that most diving is done on the West side of the island where it remains perfectly calm mostly. Exceptions occur when cold fronts or "Norwesters" as they are known locally come through and the surf picks up on the West side. This means that all boat diving is done on the South side of the island. This weather normally only lasts for a couple of days but shore diving is extremely limited and sometimes impossible while it lasts.

Water temp usually remains around 82f up until New year and then during January it can drop down as low as 77/78f.

Basically the conditions are normally close to perfect and even a Norwester means that you get to dive the South side of the island!

We are a fan of Divetech @ Cobalt Coast Resort on the NW side of Grand Cayman. They are off the beathen path but only minutes from the Seven Mile beach attractions but far away from the cruise ship area. Divetech will have everything you could every want out of diving, especially diving the Northwall sites whenever weather permits. They have 3 docks on 3 sides of the island so they cover alot of sites and always can find calm seas. They have two tank boat dives with 2 one hour profiles (free computer rental if needed) and free 24/7 unlimited shore diving from their 2 locations. The shore diving is just awesome right out front of their resort and then you need to tryout their underwater scooters. The water temp last January was 77 degrees during our dive vacation with Divetech and we used full 3 mil wetsuits.

Have a great trip....
