I am doing a liveaboard with Mike Ball on the GRB during the second week of August. I am trying to decide between by 3mm wetsuit with a hood or taking the heavier 5mm suit. Anyone with local knowledge of water temps during this time have recommendations? We will also be traveling south to dive the Yongala, so temps might be cooler there.

I did this one a couple of weeks ago and recorded temperatures of 75F - 77F. If I had a 5mm suit I would have worn it! As it was, I wore a 0.5mm suit under my 3mm suit, plus wore a hood on many of the dives. My wife started out in her 3mm suit, then chose to rent a 5mm suit from Mike Ball. She was distinctly chilled in her 3mm suit and her air consumption showed it. Normally, she can outbreathe me; on this trip, however, it was her air consumption that limited our bottom times.

Bottom line: take the 5mm suit.

Thanks for the information, guess I will take the 5mm. Did you post a trip report from your travel? Would love to hear the details.
