I will be in Dallas for a few days in Nov. (03) I have a day to kill and was wondering if it would be worth the ride to dive offshore in Galveston. If so, do you have any charter connections?

I think its about a 4hr drive from dallas?

Thanks,

Baldwin,

The probability of being able to plan anything decent out of Galveston at this time of the year is not in your favor. Diving out of Galveston is all about timing. Wind, weather and water clarity are the big ifs. Most of the smaller offshore dive operators pull up at this time of year. However, if you are bitten real hard, you could contact an LDS in Lake Jackson. They operate from Freeport, about 40 minutes south of Houston. 10 fathom line much closer there (Blue water closer)

The time frames when conditions are favorable for diving get shorter and farther apart as the weather gets colder. The current forecast calls for great conditions all week, until Friday, when it's supposed to turn ugly. This seems to be normal recently. Unless you can dive on a Monday [the forecast is always good for Monday], your chances of matching your free day with favorable conditions aren't good. Conditions can change quickly, too. I don't know how easy of a time you'd have finding a charter that operates regularly in November, either. I suspect that a lot of the dive shops have finished running Gulf trips for the season. All that negative stuff aside, if you can hit a good day you'll have a great trip.

The drive is somewhat longer than you've been informed. It's a 4 hour drive from Dallas to Houston with a heavy foot. Galveston is over an hour farther down the road. The places you would want to depart from, like Freeport or Matagorda, are a bit farther.

If you want to monitor conditions, here are some links:

If you could play hooky, right now would be the time to be out there.
