Hey Josh;

The diffuser delivered is actually pretty good! The lighting is very even, and it can be used to 1foot roughly; good enough for very pretty shots!

Josh,
I too have been debating on which housing to go with for my G9, until... Check out what this guy's shots with a G7 and a Canon case.. they are amazing!!! Flickr: BrianMayes
I might change my mind and go with Canon now and use his idea for closeup attachment...

Hi all - first please excuse my bad english, since it's not my native language. I have bought UW case (wp-dc21) for canon G9 and what a surprise - when I use a camera internal flash, it casts a MASSIVE DARK SHADOW in the lower right corner, so I guess the internal flash is completely unusable underwater?? I did not find one single information about this anywhere on the internet - this is strange, because I thougth using flash underwater is essential, so I guess that the UW housing should get many complaints for this from users.. Or am I the only one experiencig this?? Here are links to the pictures ( all made without any zoom, the third one WITHOUT the UW case - shows the same problem, when using flash from short distance (macro - est. 10cm), but the problem is much worse when using UW housing:

Please help, since I dont really know if I should contact camera seller about this issue, or I have to use some external strobe? I saw galerries from this camera from users using internal strobe only, and it did not have anything like this ..

Thanks for help or advice,

Jan, Czech Republic

JKOTIK,

The WP-DC21 comes with a diffuser. Its the milky white "shield" that sits at the front of the lens. In the attached photo, it is connected by a leash. The purpose of the diffuser is to spread the light around, preventing the shadowing that you encountered. Having never used this specific housing, I can't say how well it works, but that is what it is for.

Did that solve the problem?

I am concerned about the bottom right hand corner of the photo being shielded from the flash by the lens port?

I too am thinking of buying a G9 and Canon housing by seeing those sort of pictures is a little scary.

It did solve the problem, I just did not know about the difuser :). However, even with the difuser, there still is a slightly darker area in the lower right corner when taking a picture from less that 20cm. This is obvious if you take a picture of white paper /wall, I'm not sure if it will be noticable underwater.

The problem with macro with flash (without the UW housing - photo no. 3) is sure still there, and I think this cannot be solved by any way. You simply cannot use flash with macro - which I find a bit strange. Maybe the macro add-on lens and some DYI difuser would help, but in normal setup the maximum you can do when using flash + macro is to crop the lower right area of the foto :( ..

The diffuser makes a big difference, just being in water probably makes a sli9ght bit of a difference as opposed to shooting in air (but don't quote me on that). As far as shooting from within 20 cm/6 inches.... just stay outside of that distance and zoom in a little. I've gotten some of my better macro shots using a bit of zoom from a distance, it helps tremendously with things that are wary also.

Ha, just try going on a three week dive trip without it. :shakehead: I had just gotten both the case and camera. I still think the camera is best served with a seperate strobe though. A must have for macro photos when you need to really get close.
