Hi yall i just bought a g 9 this morning.This will be be my first camera i use under water. I am very much new to this hobby and camera suff in general.I read the stickys and dont understand much:confused:.I could not get some of the links to work also.

Ok ive decided on using the ike housing for the g9 i just need to know where to get it. (link please).im getting the ike housing because i want something to grow with me.The only question is can i use just the flash on the camera itself until i get strobes?If anyone has any suggestions let me know please.Also after the housing what the nest upgrades i should get?
thanx alex

b&h photo will have it or backscatter.com will have it backscatter is underwater photography they also have great customer service and they ship all around the world. the next thing you should get is a strobe i would recommend the DS-125 or DS-200 made by ikelight and a strobe arm.

thanx big frog!
holy crap this cam. is great its going to take me an year just to learn all this new stuff .

Depending on what you want to shoot your next investment could be a wide angle lens or a strobe. If you're doing fish type stuff I'd get a good strobe. You'll want a wide angle for wrecks and reefs, with one or two strobes preferably.

I'm drooling over this camera. I love my G5 and I can only imagine how nice the 9 is.

HI;

I just received the Ikelite for my G9. This is really a nice solid piece of work. Much bigger then the Canon housing, but the controls on the Ikelite are complete and will allow for better pictures in reality. I will be able to select aperture by turning a button, while i see the emulated scale of aperture changing on my big camera lcd. Can't wait until my first dive!!
I like the release of the shutter aspecially, a big handle that allows for prefocussing by pushing down the shutter button "half way"" . This is impossible on th eCanon housing with gloves on.
The build quality is also 1 class better; and the handle that comes standar with the housing is very ergonomic, and allows practical handling of the controls with your right hand, while having a tight grip on the handle with your left hand. Makes a big difference with the two handed operation of the aperture control on the Canon housing.

Cheers

Ryan at Reef Photo is also a good place to buy. He charges only marginally more than B&H, but you get excellent advice on gear - and that is worth a lot. For U/W photography, it is essential to establish a good relationship with a trusted vendor who can supply you a broad array of products and also help you make informed choices.

So where possible, I'd stick to people specializing in u/w photography - Reef Photo, David Haas (hey David, I finally took that Ike G6 housing underwater while my Aquatica case is in for servicing... I had forgotten how easy it is to swim with compact cameras) or Backscatter.

I would strongly recommend AGAINST buying from B&H (and this is coming from someone who has spent $15k+ there for topsides gear) simply b/c hands-on experience and detailed knowledge of each product is essential.

I'm about to take the plunge with the G9/Ikelite but it looks like my funds will fall short to include a strobe at this time and I'm okay with that as long as I will be able to take some decent shots in the meantime. I've been using a A95 in a WD-50 without a strobe and have been happy with the macro results. My question is, how does the Ike housing work with the camera's internal flash for macro? Is there a diffuser? I'm hoping that I can get by without a strobe for my next couple of trips.
