All,
I currently dive an older Bare trilam hd. It is somewhat bad fitting but does its job. I am saving for a new drysuit. My concern is it is common for me to have a large weight swing over the year. I tend to vary in weight from as light as 185 to as heavy as 210 (this is a fat swing). This happens every year almost. I am 5'8 and gain most the weight in my belly and love handles. I have been like this ever since I was younger and I have come to grips with it haha. Because of this I'm hesitant to get a expensive custom DUI drysuit which at one minute might fit ok and then the next be far to big. It appears that the fusion drysuit might be a positive in this regard. My question is does the tec community frown upon the fusion or is it ok? My future will definitely be in tech diving (deco and wreck diving)

The fusion is a great suit. I lost a bunch of weight and the suit stayed with me for about 50 pounds. It was a tight fit to start. As far as the tech aspect, it is no different than any other drysuit. My only problem was that it was so dang hot. I didn't realize it until I bought the bare.

What do you mean hot? As in even with very little undergarments you were hot?

I know of no instructor that would not allow you to take a course in a Fusion. That would be crazy.
You would be there to learn to tec dive, not debate the pros and cons of a particular style of suit.

Get a Fusion!!

185 is already overweight but 210 is obese. There is certainly a significant added risk from deco with that much fat on you. I would try to figure out what you're doing pre-hibernation to put on 25lbs every year. Perhaps with a nutritionist.

The fusion is basically a drysuit with a wetsuit stretched over it. Put it on when its 100 degrees and you'll know what I mean by hot

Fusion is a good and comfortable suit after you get into it, which is somewhat tricky. It is durable and very forgiving regarding the size. The only real downside I noticed are the pockets (Fusion Tech). The flaps are almost impossible to feel with thick dry gloves. People use different DIY tricks to fix this. And may be it takes longer to dry than regular trilam suits.

So does age, alcohol abuse, smoking, lack of hydration, high & low blood pressure, stress, lack of sleep, sh1tty breathing patterns & ascent profiles, PFO, unhealthy lifestyles (even if you are not obese) and thermal exposure to name a few.

But you have to jump on the obese bandwagon. Was the question not about what suit?? I would rather understand why you are such a @55hole, perhaps with a psychiatrist or life-coach. Hope you interact more professionally with those around you captain......

thanks for your concern but at 185 I am at 17% body fat (I have very broad shoulders, dense bones and decent muscle mass). At 210 I am upwards of 27% which is getting close to obese. As far as technical diving, yes I will be working on my body somewhat BUT I not intending on doing ULTA serious technical dives. I would like to extend my bottom times a bit and maybe go to depths of 150ft.

As far as my weight swings, what can I say...I LOVE to eat and my day job is at a desk ALL day. So what happens is I gain wait until my pants get tight and then I am pushed to lose weight, so I start exercising more and eating a bit better. Yes I understand that this isn't what you should do but it is what it is and how I have been forever.
