Hmmm... ASL (american sign language) for divers is a pretty cool little booklet...

A few have been mentioned here... one that I've used is the sign for "bored"... which incidentally is just miming picking your nose...

Close, but no banana. The index finger is placed on the side of the nose and is rotated back and forth.

ASL is the way to go. I believe all three references you listed are based on ASL.

Walter, thank you for the kind comments!

So sad that you are probably the only one on this thread--board? who truely understands and appreciates the short and sadly the fleeting history of recreational diving...so many with badges with so little knowledge and experience.

Thanks again...now I must get to work!

Sam, sorry that you feel this way. I know its sometimes easy to feel unappreciated, but rest assured, there are those who enjoy hearing more about the history of this industry.

That's the benefit of having experience and knowledge: you get to share it with others, and I for one thank you for doing so.

Many thanks.

"I leftit behind"

Love it!!

My buddy and I came up with one. To end a dive normally you use the thumb up. If there is something seriously wrong we use forearms crossed in an X with closed fists. That signals there is a serious issue that is potentially life threatening and we need to surface immediately. It was a signal we used to joke about during our buddy checks until he had a dry suit flood at 45 feet in 40F water.

Sam often posts lots of really good info that seems to be ignored. Maybe if more of us would let him know we are reading and learning he wouldn't get those impressions.

I have said it before, but probably not enough. GREAT POSTS SAM!! The sport is so much richer when you know the history behind it. Keep up the great writing!

Goofie Hand Signals!

When asked for something , you forgot to bring on the dive (like a slate?)
Point to your EYE
Point to your left nipple
Point to your butt

Meaning; I LEFT IT BEHIND!

Goofie Hand Signals!

When requesting your buddy to come closer. (in a not so nice tone)
Left hand produced the O sign, right hand aligned with the O, uses the index finger to indicate "come here" !

meaning : COME HERE! (SLANG WORD FOR ANAL SPHINCTER)

A signal we use with our students:
Make a fist with one hand and grasp the fist with the other hand. Pull the fist out of your grasp. Translation: Get your head out of your rear end.

Sam, thank you for sharing. As a newbie to diving, I (we ! ) need your help, and appreciate it more than you realize. ( As an "old timer" with my long-time "sport" (martial arts), having been with "them" back "when", I believe I understand. )
Every so often, a student really cares......and it's worth it again.
Please continue.
