Hey folks,

I'm curious about the pass/fail model for GUE courses. I have an eventual plan to take fundamentals. I'm not super hung up on my rating from the class, because I'm sure I'll learn a ton either way, but I was curious about this. Say I took the course and didn't pass. If I eventually wanted to take another course at a higher level, would I have to completely re-take Fundies and get a tech rating, or is it possible to just re-test the skills with a GUE instructor?

Thanks

At the end of the course you can pass, fail, or receive a provisional pass. If the latter, you can arrange with the instructor for another evaluation. I didn't see a hard time window just now when I looked at the GUE site, but six months seems to stick in my mind.

My question is why would you want to move to the next level is you couldn't pass the previous one? It sort of sounds like you want to live up to your user name.

I think it is 6 months for provisional to rec/tech pass, but indefinite to go from rec pass to tech pass.

I don't recall that being the case, at least as a matter of policy. Check with your instructor as to the timeframes for each.

Thanks for the helpful responses. I was curious to know what someone's options were in the case they didn't pass the first time around. It seems to me, the class is expensive and if (if) I didn't pass, I'd like to know I could re-evaluate without taking it all over again.

Hah. I've used that name so long I forget what it actually says. Have you always been perfect at everything the first time? Usually, if I don't do so well at something that I'm interested in, I try again until I get better. You seem to be implying that if I didn't do so well the first time, then I should just give up. Yeah, I'd likely fail if I took the class tomorrow, but I'm not taking it tomorrow.

again, thanks for the info!

Wasn't really implying anything or suggesting you should give it up.

If you fail, learn from your failure and take it again.

Your question really sounded like 'hey I'm not a diver yet and I'm going to take Open Water, but if I fail can I take Rescue diver'.

The whole crawl before walking thing.

What is going on Scott?

Going diving tomorrow in Boynton Beach with a SB member I have not met in person. He is spreaing and I am going for lobster with the season winding down months end. Sorry I forgot to mail manual. Going out Monday. Visiting family...:shocked2:
