I'd try dragging for it. Dive only to check a possible hit. Even better if you got someone who can free dive it. What's the viz like?

I have never dove in it but from the road it does not look too clear. I would estimate it to be maybe 15 feet (hopefully someone with more experience will correct me). Also because of the boat traffic and whatever they dump in there I would consider it an environmental risk and dress accordingly. People tell me it was common in the past for ships to dump unwanted stuff overboard so who knows what is there. You may even find Jimmy Hoffa in cement boots on the bottom.

Diving in after would not be overly clever. First of all, I never wear my weight belt out to a site. I put that on once we are getting kitted up. I always have my suit on on the way to a site. So how would a person manage to go down.

Sucks for the person though! I think I would cry!

From a boat underway? You'll have one irate captain if you jump off his boat like that. With no mask and fins you wouldn't be able to search for it anyway.

considering how much I suck at diving, I would consider it an omen to take up another sport.

Seems to me, that even if diving were "off limits" in this area, that there would be some red tape someplace that would allow you to "salvage" that gear???

Hopefully somone that's either in the Coast Guard or know's someone in the Coast Guard can chime in about that... Seems like there would be some kind of process someplace that would allow one to apply for a special permit to dive the area...

Either go that route, or start looking for somone on the Local Police Force to talk too. Most cop's are good people and I'm sure would sympathize. Who know's maybe you can get the local PD to do some "training S&R dives" in that area, if they were to just happen to find the gear and raise it, maybe the guy that lost it could offer a reward to the PD dive team ??

I would assume the search divers would have surface support, preferably tethered to signal recall.
