I was sitting around thinking about full face masks one day...you know the ones that let you talk to other divers. I was wondering, do they encompass your ears as well? How do you clear your ears with them? Is the nose flexible like a regular mask?

good questian!!! I don't know the answier but to add to the subject. What do you do if your mask fluds???

Well it depends on the mask for both questions...

#1 - Your ears are not covered by the mask, when clearing some masks (Kirby Morgan M-48, SCUBA PRO, Mantis) have flexible silicone pockets in front to squeeze your nose just like a normal SCUBA mask.

Others (Interspiro MK-II / AGA, Ocean Reef, EXO-26) have an internal shelf you push the mask in until your nose is resting on the device and then are able to clear.

#2 - Most masks are cleared by pressing the purge button, the function is the same as when you clear your mask but you can use the purge instead of breathing out. One version of the AGA mask by Interspiro has a positive pressure mode, this can be activated and performs the same function.

is the mask of choice for my team. We use ithem (in conjunction with drysuits) primarily to protect our faces from the chemical and biological hazards we often face in search & recovery work.

We also use the Divelink U/W comm. systems that are affixed to the mask and they work great. We can converse diver-to-diver, and diver-to-surface. With the AGA's, you can speak quite clearly.

The downsides of the AGA's are that since its a positive pressure system, they use air faster than a conventional demand reg. Also, the AGA's tend to push air into your drysuit or wetsuit hood and baloon up your hood. I put several small holes at the top of my hoods and that seems to work.

Before you buy a FFM see if you can try some different ones out. I own an AGA non-positive pressure model, equipped with a surface breathing valve. My gas consumption is about the same as using my standard apeks regulator. If you decide to buy a FFM make sure you get some training and experience in a pool prior to using it in open water. We practiced switching from our FFMs to a mask and regulator until we were comfortable before heading out to open water.
