Made it to FT W this morning for a dive. Arrived around 8:30 and only one in the parking lot. High tide was 10:22 so I was catching the incoming tide. Winds from the S-SW so some waves coming in early. The water temp was a balmy 70-71 on the surface and 68 at 27 ft. Dove the boat ramp side cove. It was so nice to be diving in relatively warm water. Vis in the beginning of the dive not that great, 4-5 with particulates hanging around. Sun light though was bright. Heading along the west wall of the cove. Lobsters, squid, flounder, and tons of small fish. A very fishy dive. There were small fish about 4-5 inches with a black horizontal strip that stayed on the bottom and were very curious. Can someone Id them?. Pic below. They were all over the cove. Nice video of squid. I will try to edit and post.

After I about twenty minutes I surfaced against the west wall of the boat ramp cove. I looked back to the parking lot and thought I saw someone going through my car. I pulled a major bone head move and owe someone a big apology. I left my car unlocked (I never do this but forgot my otter box and plastic key for the car). I felt uncomfortable doing this, especially being the only car in the parking lot. Part of the reason I surfaced after 20 just to check things out. From my view I only saw one car and it looked like mine just where I parked it and with someone going through the trunk. I started yelling at the person. As I swam about 100 ft, I could see now that he was at his car and my car was to the right. I tried to apologize from the distance though not sure it was heard. The other car was identical to mine, parked the same way backed up against a bench. That put a scare into me. I won't forget my plastic key or otter box for the regular key again. Again my apologies to whoever I yelled out.

Once I figured out what was what, I decided to descend and continue my dive. 40 minutes total. Came up to the parking lot, relaxed for a while and decided to finish off my tank in the shallows with 1200 psi to burn off. Tide was now just about slack, sun bright and vis improved in some areas to 6-8. Some more pics attached.

BTW Did not see any tropical but they should be in. Happy diving.

Thanks. That sounds right. Definitely bass like.

Another morning at FT W today 9-2-16. High tide around 9:30 AM with winds out of the North making nice conditions in the cove. More people around kayaking and getting ready to dive. First one in around 8:30. Temps wonderful 70 on the surface and 68 at 25ft. Lots of fish, didn't see any tropicals, Vis 5-8 and variable.

I haven't seen any tropicals yet either anywhere where I usually see them. Green Bridge, Price's Neck, Kings Beach, FTW.
I read on the accuweather site that the rotation of the earth has slowed a little as apparently it does now and then, this has caused the ocean currents that the Gulf Stream is part of to slow down. This might explain why the lack of tropicals, they haven't arrived yet on a slower Gulf stream. I think it may also account for the cooler water temps we have this year especially in the deeper water.

This is also how science thinks the warming and cooling of the earth has been happening for all these millions of years. The exchange of warm and cold water slows down enough to affect the atmospheric temperature. At some point the earth changes it's rotation speed and things go back to "normal" whatever normal is on this dynamically changing planet.

If the Gulfstream moves farther from shore, then there will be fewer fish larva finding their way to Rhode Island. This is probably just be a temporary change of the current. This coming storm is going to screw the pooch for local diving for awhile. Winds ar going be hitting 20 knot tonight . I may have to hang up my fins for the year.

Don't despair. There is still time to get some more diving in. Sept and Oct can be excellent, even for us wet divers.

It may clear up in a couple of weeks; it really wasn't as bad as predicted. I went to Bearvertail yesterday to watch the waves the biggest was about 8'. We also didn't get the rain that was predicted. So IMO by the end of the month we'll see the usual 5' vis at FTW. ;)

Rich, I don't think it's further out but that's possible what I read was that speed that it moves has slowed, which may affect the volume and/or the temperature of the water. What I read made it sound like this was a recent finding so what exactly is going on may not be fully understood. There's so much we don't understand.
