Ft. Pickens Road already washed over by Ida

The weather channel has already reported that Ft. Pickens Road is washed over by gulf water. The high tide for tonight is going to be close to landfall at 1:30am, so that is even worse news. Lets hope the road doesn't get washed away :blessing:.

I was hoping to get in a dive there on Saturday and Sunday, but now I don't think the water will be down and off the road by then (if the road is still there). If I can make it out there I will give a condition report of the road and water conditions following Ida.

Lets hope it holds up. I had planned on camping there on the 21st. and doing a night dive.

As we all saw the last couple of months....the water was washing over the road when we had a high tide and just some moderate winds. Hopefully the asphalt will hold as the tide recedes.

i think they designed the road so the sand would wash over and "protect" it from the storm surge...reason why it's a little below the sand level. but, i could be wrong lol. but, id like to go out there as well this weekend wjefferis, as im finally free.

After all of that time waiting for the road to be repaired, I just really hope a freaking tropical storm in November doesn't take it out . Heck, I still have another six months on my annual pass to use up .

Unfortnately the video they were showing of Ft. Pickens road on the Weather Channel showed the water washing out some of the sand on the North side of the road. This may allow the water to undermine the road as the water rushes back out (hopefully not). There are a few places where the road is still very close to the water at about the halfway point to the Fort. This is the area of concern for me. There is also a low place in the road that was flooded when GlenFWB, Denisegg, and SeaYoda met up with me at Ft. Pickens a while back. We were able to get through it with trucks, but the park rangers were telling folks with smaller cars to turn around, and like GLenFWB said that happend only after a couple of days of good rain.

I have heard people talk about the sand covering the road theory...problem with that theory as I see it....that the biggest problem with the roads appears to be when the tide is pulling back out. It washes out under the road. On Okaloosa Island, they put some concrete shims down in the ground beside the asphalt to help avoid this problem in places. We haven't had a storm to test it since they fixed it a few years ago.

But, my feeling is since they didn't do anything to stop the sand from being washed out under the asphalt...that we will lose some sections of road. Our best case scenario is that it only washes out in one or two places that might allow for an easier patch job.l

My understanding was that they put down a thick wafer/honeycomb type material under the asphalt that would prevent the water from working its way under the road and lifting it. I saw something in the paper on it at one point but it's been awhile.
