We are going for a vacation to Oahu next December. We would like to do a manta ray night dive at the Big Island. Is there an operator who does manta night dives from Oahu? Or is there a ferry which we could take when going to Big Island?

Thank from your answers! :)

If you do a ScubaBoard Search of "Hawaii Superferry" your results will be 19 threads. A few are not much interest, like the "no fly" thread, but this one was had all the participants in rare form......

:rofl3:

Short story; the only ferries in Hawaii run between Maui and Lanai and between Maui and Molokai, and the Big Island (Hawai'i) is the only Island with Night Manta dives (out of Kona).

There's no such thing as commmercial passenger boat traffic between those islands (other than the cruise ships). If you could box yourself up and get someone to drop you off at the barge depot you might make it to the Big Island in about a day and a half. It's a long ways between the islands. The superferry was supposed to run at 40 some odd miles an hour (quite fast for a boat) and they were looking at about a 5 hour trip.

You're looking at airline tickets, then an overnight in Kona and it'd be a good idea to take the last flight back to Oahu if you can't stay 2 nights.

Don't worry, the flights are fairly cheap and exceedingly regular. Do give yourself a day to offgas - even though inter-island flights are very short, the aircraft still make it above 35,000 feet in altitude. I suggest you spend a day or three there, since the Big Island has superb diving. It's very cheap and easy to rent a little condo or whatever, not to mention a car for shore-diving.
