The next day they flew home to Colorado. She had a splitting headache and eye pain for 9 days and went to the local hospital where the ER doc was a diver and asked the correct questions, luckily the hospital has a chamber. She was sent to the chamber for 6 hours and is feeling much better since then.

The 9 days is interesting, A few years ago I had symptoms after returning to Colorado from Belize, went into, probably the same hospital in Denver, and was told that as it had been three or four days since my last dive it was likely I didn't have any excess nitrogen left in my system and the decompression chamber wouldn't do much. Still did a table 6, and the next day a shorter ride as they said the chamber might have some therapeutic value, but its interesting that after 9 days the chamber had a significant impact for your friend.

Glad it worked out OK! Though curious about the thoughts from any dive medicine folks on the board about the effectiveness of decompression treatment after that period of time...

They didn’t even have a basic watch to time their safety stop.
The dive ops I am familiar with require each diver making a dive deeper than 60 feet to have a dive computer. But...Mexico.....

but its interesting that after 9 days the chamber had a significant impact for your friend.
As a US Navy trained recompression chamber operator/supervisor I cannot believe it did.
@Duke Dive Medicine what say you?

Did they even have dive tables and a watch with them on the dive?
Dive tables and a watch are useless if you don't plan to use them.

Just saying.

Unfortunately, you cannot purchase situational awareness. That is the most lacking component in this story.
Agree, people like that who are apparently perfectly willing to delegate responsibility to a "professional" for significant safety issues, are probably not going to pay a whole hell of a lot of attention to their computer - should they drop a grand on one.

I did not have any timing device in ow training. But bought a Swatch afterward and eventually progressed to computer two yrs later.
I was on a LoB to Coral Sea in Australia and the operator insisted anyone who did not have a computer will be limited to 18m max. And I did not have one but shown them I could plan a multi-level dive by using the Wheel. All went well. Bought a computer when I got home.

Computer is useful but I had seen on many occasions that diver did not understand why the computer was making noises or flashing light!!

Over the Christmas holiday I had a friend and her husband go to Cozumel. While there they completed 4 days for diving, on their last day her husband ran out of gas at 97 feet. They had been at depth for over 10 mins, per her recollection she was not 100% sure because they did not have a computer between them. When he ran his cylinder down the DM instructed them to use her Octo and ascend, they performed their safety stop per their console at 15 ft, which she said was probably only one min or two max. They got back on the boat and waited for the other divers to return. After their surface interval they completed their second dive without incident.

When I spoke to her I asked if she had called DAN when she started feeling ill in Mexico and she said they don't travel with DAN. I was a bit flabbergasted by the entire situation. I am still a newish diver and they have been diving for years and apparently they "just trust the DM" to keep them safe. The third piece of equipment I bought was a computer, after my mask and fins, per recommendations on this board and others. I guess this is more a question, is it common to holiday divers to not have computers/DAN on their trips, or are they out layers?

Edited: for buddy breath misuse.
I dive mostly in Colombia and see lots of divers without computers. The DC I just dove with in Providencia passed out computers to everyone that didn’t have one , the first DC I have seen do this.
