The rule of thirds pertains to composition. Imagine a tic-tac-toe grid. The 4 points where those lines intersect is where you want to position your subject. For instance, that photo would have been better if I would have had his eye in the upper right intersection. Check out THIS LINK for illustrations that explain it way better than I can! BTW, Dave has an excellent way of explaining things. You'll learn alot going through his photo instruction website. Although he shoots film, his website is the basics of photography, whether you're using film or digital. These are the techniques that make the photos stand out, no matter what camera you're using.
