Okay, Got off of the phone with a on-line scuba equipment vendor. I was trying to hook a good price on weights. I was quoted a price of 22 bucks per 5 pounds. The cost of shipping is 12 buck per weight because lead is carcinogenic. What a bunch of hooey!. This is yet again and absolute rip off.

Sorry, but I had to vent. This means that the 30#s that I need to weight myself with my 7MM in cold water will run a cool 140 bucks!

Wow, I'm glad the folks that have sold me weights on Ebay and shipped cheap via USPS priority mail didn't know that.

Maybe on this one you should try a dive shop.

We went down to the local tire shop, was given a bucket of old tire weights and with a mold made our own. We did have some cost in melting the lead, mold and time doing it but it was still cheaper than purchasing them.

If you don't have the tools, it will cost more and probably not worth the trouble.

But, I do hear you on the crazy crap about shipping stuff, it can be absolutely insane.

Wow, that is spendy. Soft weight run about $3 a pound. Check with your local dive store...they should be able to help you.

Lead isn't carcinogenic by the way. Lead exposure can cause central nervous system toxicity. With scuba gear, the best way to avoid this is to not lick, eat, or grind up and inhale your lead weights.

Holding them and shipping them through the mail shouldn't be a problem.

The whole lead scare has gotten way out of hand.

The LDS quoted 4 bucks per pound, which is why I wanted to check around. Not that I wouldn't buy local, But when I am looking for 30-40 pounds it adds up. I knew that shipping would add substantially to the pricebut didn't know about the surcharge.

The lead scare is a ridiculous scam. Those of us into reloading firarm ammo has also felt the squeeze, I just didn't think that it had gotten this stupid.

Thank the tree huggers and other idiots. No lead in paint I can understand cause of the number of dee-da-dees out there who eat it but some of their other crap is ridiculous. I used to do lead miniatures. Now they are made out of some type of tin alloy that sucks, detail is crap, mold lines hard to remove, and try to make minor modifications. As for weights for diving I say turn tables on the bums! Dive steel doubles. I do and don't need no stinkin weights!

I have caught onto the steel tank trick. I have also been able to drop weights as I get more comfortable. I figured weights would set me back some, but the current rate is extreme. Ebay will do just fine.

My next acquisition will be my BC. I will do the integrated weight thing. But to gear up for next weekend's dives, I am in trouble.
