By clear often you mean performing the Frenzel repeatedly while descending, right?
Well, not repeatedly... just before it's really needed. A little clearing pressure more often is better than a few powerful clears when it's painful.

james, is this in any way related to the grouper calling? i've been trying to picture it.
 
Well, yes - the grouper call is using your tongue and larynx to bring up the air, and the frezel uses that snippet of air to clear your ears. So I guess they're related.

For me, the grouper call is accompanied by a slight extension of the jaw, which is okay, because it's done with the snorkel out of the mouth.
