IMHO, every dive class should begin with swimming, progress to freediving and then on SCUBA. I know most SCUBA classes these days do not teach skin diving, but I believe that to be a mistake. Skin diving is superior in many ways to SCUBA, of course the reverse is also true. It is a wonderful thing to experience both.

Aegir & all

I believe that there are courses at Fort Bovisand in Plymouth, although they may be going into Receivership. This may have already happened but the last time I went to their site they were still booking. I have been freediving since I was 7 and haven't had any formal training. Getting some good advice would not be a bad idea as this can be a very dangerous sport, in my opinion probably more so than recreational SCUBA. Good luck if you go ahead!

OceanSpirit & All

Thx for the info OceanSpirit

Do you know where i can find info on tai chi breathing excercises ( or any freediving excercises)on the net to build my lung capacity and breathing muscles. Thank's very much :)

Try the 'bible' of Freedivers which is called (funnily enough) 'Freediving' by Terry Maas and David Sipperly. It's £30. The only place I've seen it for sale on the Net (but then again, I've not been looking!)is on the website I mentioned in a previous reply.

Oki Dokey OceanSpirit i cant afford that right now so i guess i will have to keep my eye out for other web resources...thx anyways.

I've made a freediving course 10 years before I took my OW certification and practiced a lot during 5 or 6 years.
I felt much more confident during the OW course than the others who didn't have any kind of diving experience.
But since I scuba dive I haven't done any freediving.
