After a couple months haitus from freediving, a buddy and I took the scooters out for some fun at Old Airport Beach here on Maui. Nearly 2 hrs in the water with over 80 minutes of trigger time was a blast. The best part was how easy and fun these things make breath hold diving. I've never gotten much more than 90 seconds bottom time but today I was getting a little over 2 minutes and not completely breathless when I surfaced. We headed a few hundred yards off shore and I dipped down to the bottom, easily hitting 53 fsw and feeling like I'd only been to 25 when I surfaced. My record before this was 45 feet and I was really dizzy upon surfacing (cutting it close for me).
After messing around for about 20 minuutes we turned south and decided to head to Blackrock for a "looksee" (it's been awhile since I was last there). As we were heading into the current the whole way we decided that we could always swim back if necessary, so off we went, scootering South .75 miles for 50 minutes. We scootered around Blackrock watching the turtles until we started to get cold and then turned North to head back. Another 30 minutes on the trigger and the scooters died as we approached the beach, leaving us about 50 yards to swim.
All in all we scootered 1.74 miles (according to Google Earth) and had well over 80 minutes of trigger time (don't know how much time we spent just "playing" for the first 20 minutes).
By the time we got back to the car all I wanted to do was charge up the batteries and go back for another ride, but I settled for a Sandwich and cup of Clam Chowder at Subway. What a wonderful day of diving
Aloha, Tim
P.S. My buddy today is a recent lifeguard graduate, but non scuba diver ... so far (But I'm working at changing that )
