The Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar focuses on providing Course Directors, Instructor Trainers, and Instructors with a greater knowledge of how to proactively protect shipwrecks, artificial reefs, and other underwater cultural sites as part of the marine environment. Upon completion of the Seminar, participants can teach the new Heritage Awareness Specialty Course, approved by PADI, NAUI, and SSI, as well as incorporate underwater historic preservation into other courses.
Instructors, ITs, and CDs now is your chance to increase your knowledge of the underwater world! The Florida Public Archaeology Network, Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research, and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary are proud to present the next HADS, May 18-19, in Marathon. The two-day seminar will include one day of classroom-based learning and one day of in-field training. Classroom discussions will include types of submerged cultural resources, problems with protecting shipwrecks, what shipwrecks can tell us about our past, the relationship between natural and cultural resources, laws protecting historical resources underwater, and what divers can do to become stewards of submerged history. In-field training will consist of visiting two local historic shipwrecks to provide participants with direct experience relating to the previous days lectures.
The Seminar is free, although participants will need to secure their own space on the charter boat and provide their own equipment.
