Free fills at the Fire Dept????

That helps pay if your house catches on Fire, they are being nice if they fill your tanks for free, it's not like they have to.

Even if they are free, I hope you give the FD some type of donation to at least help maintain their equipment.

Most likely, they would not be able to accept any kind of donation anyway. My guess is that they are happy to help you out, especially if you live in their response district. If you feel you want to do something for them, bring a 1/2 gallon of ice cream every once in a while to the station that fills your tanks.
