I am going to be getting a backplate rig very soon, and I have read many posts that complain about burr problems. Maybe this is a issue of the past, but I though I would add a few comments about using a chainsaw file and its benefits, since I have only seen it mentioned once.

1. Any Home Depot or Lowes has them but they are not found in the Tool section of the store, find them in the lawnmower section. Or you can get them year long at any John Deere dealer. Some Aces also carry chainsaws.
2. They come in 3 diameters that I know of.
3. They are not tapered, therefore they cut uniformly.
4. Since they have a unique cutting pattern that leaves a very smooth finish, so there is no need for sandpaper.
5. They are much easier to handle than a mototool, no chance of walking it across your backplate by accident, yet they cut rapidly.
6. I would highly recommend them for the stainless steel backplates, for aluminum they might clog up. Perhaps an fingernail emory board would be better on aluminum or I often deburr aluminum with the backside of the razor blade on a utility knife.

Good info. I'm going to be deburring a Hammerhead STA soon and will look for the chainsaw file.

Surprised to hear of burrs on Halcyon plates.

I de-burred one of my Hammerheads, but I was warned on the website I may need to do it. Although it was not bad at all. I used something like a chainsaw file I borrowed.

I personally use the MC Pac for my DAM. If you don't have a bag or dam, I'd ditch it. Makes getting the the nuts a pita.

Surprised to hear of burrs on Halcyon plates.

Mine was poorly finished in the webbing slots and immediately started to fray the webbing. I returned it to Halcyon and they deburred it.

Sign of the times I guess. Unhappy to hear that (twice in one thread).

At least they stepped up. I've had good experience with Halcyon customer support.

I remember being concerned when I saw the number of burrs the first time I saw a Halcyon plate. I couldn't understand why the product was released in that condition. OIt was obvious that the webbing was going to get shredded on that one. This is one of the several reasons I was impressed with the first DSS plate that Tobin showed me years ago at the dive park. I liked the guides in the slots for the webbing... smooth move, Tobin!

I thought Halcyon had begun deburring their plates years ago. Did you get an old one, Ken?

Every man should already own a file in their tool box, it's a very basic tool. Having to deburr the slots in a plate shouldn't be too much of a problem for anyone. I agree that they should already be deburred when they leave the shop, but it's still an easy matter to correct.
It would honestly never cross my mind to mail a plate back to the company and have them deburr it for me.
The Halcyon plates I've seen all had nicely radiused slots, probably a bad production run.

+1 on Tobin's plates, Dr. Bill.
