Hi,

Halcyon Explorer 40lb wing, maybe 6 weeks old now (was bought new).

Rear dump valve pull thread is shredded as per attached photo. No idea how this has happened.

Can I fix this myself and what do I need to a) order b) do to replace the string on the dump? And any thoughts on how to prevent this in future? Maybe I've been pulling on it too vigorously???

Thanks for your help.

John

Take the valve apart and replace the worn cord with para cord the same diameter. Then check where the cord exits the valve see if there are any sharp bits that could wear the cord. Make sure the knots are secure you don't want to pull on the dump valve and just end up with the handle in your hand! Also when pulling on the dump valve try and keep the pull in the same plane as the hole don't just pull down on the handle.

Could you put up a photo with the entire face of the valve in focus. It appears to have suffered some abrasion.

Sure, the fix is pretty easy. But six weeks old, take it back to your LDS were you bought it and firmly request replacement parts. These items should last years. Did by chance this get caught in a door or damaged by a mishap?

It's easy to repair. Just open the dump by firmly but gently unscrewing it. Slowly remove the contents, since there is a spring inside, against a rubber disc. Note the way it's put together before you undo it completely. Restring it, and reassemble. Tighten the assembly snug and firm, but don't over torque it. It is meant to be assembled by hands (no vise grips or pliers).

It wouldn't be a bad idea to go on Halcyon's web site and get the assembly drawing for this dump. Then you will have a guide. But really, it's not rocket science, so you should be OK.

From your photo, it looks like it got caught somewhere. But your dealer should help you out. I'm sure he wants you happy, so when you want other parts or gear, you will purchase them at the shop. If they argue, tell them to give you the parts and you will make the repair.

It happen during assembly. The sheath of the cord was not cut and tied properly. Some quality control inspection before being shipped should have caught it.

Easy repair. They should do it or give you the entire piece to screw on.

E-mail them the pic. Good Luck and have a great time diving!

Thanks for the posts. Will try to post better photo later but am on hold in rural France with awful Internet connection so not so easy.

Will ask my dealer to send me the part and will do it myself. Don't have time to send it off as have a dive course immediately I get back from hols.

Thanks for the instructions on how to go about replacing the line - that's exactly what I needed. I'll post back in a week when I actually get around to fixing it and get confused when bend up with 3 more parts than I started with :-)

Cheers guys,
J

Not doing that shouldn't make it fray in such a short amount of time - and there are times - like when the wing doesn't have much air in it and you're horizontal - when you need to pull the cord towards the surface, or you won't dump; otherwise you're pulling the dump valve downward, where it won't be at the high point of the air cell

Here's a full frontal :D of the OPV.

However, I spoke to the people I bought the wing from and they and the kindly people at Halcyon have sent me a new wing and I'll be sending them this one back. Superb service, very impressed. They did express surprise at the damage, not sure I'll ever find out what caused it.

So I'll have a functional wing for my fundies course on Friday. That's the good news :). Bad news is I did my back in a few days ago, pretty bad, and it's gonna be a race between my physio and the fundies course to see whether they can fix my back in time. Shame Halcyon don't provide replacement vertebrae :(

Cheers,
John
