I am considering a dry suit ,but I hear a lot about how easy it is to rip latex seals and how neoprene seals are prone to leak. So, for example , if I reach under a rock for a lobster how likely am I to rip a wrist seal ? How fragile are these latex seals ? Thanks===========Ron

I assume you wear gloves? I wear my regular wetsuit gloves with my latex seals and they pretty much cover the seals. If you wear gauntlets they most definitely would totally cover your seals and protect them when you're reaching under rocks...

The seals are fragile is mistreated donning and doffing and in storage. Once in place are not really a concern. Ozonalysis is my main concern; O3 cleaves hydrocarbons and if left out in the air has a more limited shelf life. You will have to replace latex seals now and then no matter what if used a lot. I think cornstarch may buffer the effects of hand/finger oil contamination and air exposure but thats not confirmed. Just care for the seals and they will last.

Latex seals are amazingly tough. You have to use "some" care when putting on, and removing the suit, but other than that..... You will get instructions, including care, when you buy your suit. It is recommended that you clean the seals with a little soap and water after a number of uses, and dry the suit properly. It's a good idea to dust the seals before storing the suit, but this just makes it easier the next time you have to use it. You just want to avoid putting a nick in the edge of the seal, as this will cause it to tear. But I would'nt be too concerned about them being fragile, they can take a pretty good working out. Try going on the DUI site, they have the manuals online, and you can read about them before you make a decision.
