I would like take the family camping this summer, in the Jamestown/Newport area and do some diving, we all dive, biking and hiking. It seems as Fort Getty is the only campground near Ft Wetherill. Does anyone one have any experience camping at Ft Getty? We tent camp if it makes a difference. Are there any other campgrounds in the area. Lastly where else, besides Ft Wetherill is there good diving, 20 or 30 ft max depth.

Thanks,
John

Burlinggame in Charlestown is also nice for tent camping, FT Getty can be quite windy.

Also visit the OSS diveshop in Jamestown for a 10 am fun dive Sat or Sun and they will give info on other dive sites.

While I have not camped at FG, I am in that area quite often and the only advice that I can give is to reserve you spot asap. They get jammed during the summer.

really nice campground wooded areas- hot showers- at Melville Ponds Campground..181 Bradford ave Portsmouth RI 02871 tel # 401-849-8212..Ft Getty may only be for RV's--this place is much nicer not out in the open..no trees or anything like that at ft getty just big empty field.for the diving...Besides ft wetherill(which I pretty much only use to lauch zodiac) is kings beach fishing area in Newport..there is a spot near kings beach where water is on both sides of road, park on side and go in on ocean side..Beavertail park jametown,,go to parking area #2 enter nearby..

Hello I live in Jamestown. I am approximately 2 miles for Ft Getty and walk my dog there nightly. You can tent camp there. While it is wide open, you would be hard pressed to find a nicer setting (water views). There is a ramp there. as far as dive spot close by: what are your interests? There are many, many good sites close by.

I have to second Sean on the view at Ft Getty it is breathtaking. When I camped there we had a bit of rain that made a huge rainbow over the bay. It was worth the wind.

I'm pretty familiar with the area, but I've never even heard of the Ft. Getty camping area. Where is it located?

Fort Getty is a nice place to camp and dive. That's right, you can dive right at the campground! In fact, if one plays the tides right, they can drift dive from the boat entry area around and to the backside. The viz is quite variable from 2' to > 20' at times but it is a fun and interesting dive. As has been mentioned, both Fort Wetherill and Beavertail are also on Jamestown and are nice dives. When one of these three areas is blowing and/or bad viz, it is likely that one of the others will be promising.

Now the caveat for me with this is that most of the RV sites at Fort Getty are seasonal so it has been tough to get in with a motorhome. However I think that you should have an easier time with tenting though I'd still recommend making your reservations early.

You can't beat the Sunsets either. I get spoiled this time of year because, it is closed for the winter and some nights when walking the dog I am the only person there.
