"I'm not talking about a panicked diver"

Actually, when you said, "Walter c'mon!!You NEVER seen anybody place their mask on their forehead calmly????" you were talking about a panicked diver because it was in direct response to:

"I've seen panicked divers remove their masks, I've never seen one place it calmly on his forehead."

I'd already agreed with you that it's your choice. You have an increased risk of losing your mask, but that's your choice. You also have an increased risk of an idiot annoying you because they think you're in trouble. That's also your choice.

So, what do "you all" (the CORRECT way to say it) think about mask on the BACK of your head? That's where I keep mine.

Two words: Slap strap

Easy to get backwards on the head and far more comfortable and secure feeling than the mask on the forehead.

I don't drink beer. How 'bout margaritas f/ Kat?

I've heard they're not really rules - more like guidlines.

Walter, I like your avitar, it makes me feel like I'm still on the 'old' scubaboard.

I tell students that who ever I catch putting their mask on their forehead has to buy me a six pack.

I don't do it because it's a sign of distress. I do it cuz I can't afford to buy my own beer and I know student will put their mask on their foreheads. LOL

Really though, it's a good way to loose a mask. I don't care if a diver looses their mask but I don't want them doing it in my class if I can help it. Of course I could just start charging for recovering them.

cdiver2:
WHY would a mask on the forehead be a good indicator of distress if it could be swept of so easy? So if it's not on the forehead and you dont see a mask at all you assume everything is ok?.

It is not a good indicator of distress, and I would not recommend it. However, most people (including Walter), have at least heard of it as such an indicator/signal. Some people (including DMs, but never Walter :54:) will respond as such (probably because a DM assumes that this person might still be under that wayward belief that it is a signal) and ask if you are OK.

Personally, I avoid the whole issue when on public boats by simply keeping my mask on. Slap straps are great, but when I spin them around the strap slips down to cover my eyes (where I keep the wool when I am out of the water), and I hate having it under my chin.

When I dive off friend's boats, I often put it on my forehead if the conditions permit - haven't lost one yet...

QuoVadis:
Well obviously i wouldnt put it on my forehead in rough sees or coming up to a boat but our class was standing on the beach getting instructions and a few of us (not me) had their masks on their forehead and he scolded them (yes scolded!) Personally i dont care how it LOOKS up there but i do feel its more comfortable!!!!!!

I did my open water certs with a shop that was DIR. They drilled into us that the mask, when not on our face was to be worn backwards. Wearing on our foreheads was a sign of distress. They did yell at us if we forgot and just slid the mask up. Now I don't know if this has any thing to do with DIR. I only mention this because they were very DIR so I assumed it was.
