I am writing from the Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research in Tallahassee, Florida. As part of my job I manage Florida’s Underwater Archaeological Preserves (www.musuemsinthesea.com). These are historic shipwrecks from around the state that are interpreted for the public through brochures, an on-site plaque, and a web page. They are as varied as a galleon and a freighter, a steamboat and a battleship. Visiting is encouraged, and the sites are adopted by area communities. Having a local Preserve can boost tourism, and we are hoping to expand the program to include more wreck sites.

A Preserve must be nominated by members of the public. Each shipwreck needs to meet the following criteria. They must:

  • Be in state waters
  • Have recognizable features
  • Be accessible to the public
  • Have a verifiable identity and history
  • Safe diving conditions
  • Plentiful marine life

If you have any ideas about an historic shipwreck in your area that might make a good Preserve, please fill out the form at this link:

and return it to us.

Thank you and I hope that you have a great summer.

Sincerely,

Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research
