Becky (OrlandoRogue) is going to be in Sacramento at the end of november training some people in her company's product and as such is thinking of making a long weekend out of it. Being her main buddy and an inquizitive friend i am taking the liberty of asking about the diving possibilities out there and of course hope to also be able to make the trip too!! ;) This is another in a long string of trips around the country, just a week before this should be in Gilboa quarry up in OH, but our plans for diving in SC fell through and i cant make the Mass dives over the halloween weekend - we will cover all the states/regions in our time!

It looks like the long weekend would be the weekend of 11/27-29 (maybe flying in on 26th and me probably leaving on 29th redeye back again like i did when i visited SoCal a few months back. So from flying into Sacramento, or possibly flying into SF if prices are better, what options do we have? It looks about 1.5 hours down the coast from SF to Monterey and about 1.5 inland of SF is Sacramento (obviously not as much diving there compared to the coast). I understand there is a very tough dive at Monestary, but i was wondering what the other shore dives were like around that same peninsular (all mentioned in this month's Rodales i believe - but i would prefer a local's thoughts over a magazine review) - i cant recall the names of the coves precisely, but can check tonight when i get home. What opportunities are there out of SF or north of there? What kind of temps might we expect at any of these locales? We are only equipped with 5mm's and hoods for our typical cavern diving and recall getting slightly chilly when the water got down to 55F @100ft out on the Channel Islands, but ok in the low 60's when i was higher up the water column.

Our other options are of course to skip the diving until summer time and do other things around that area or rent 7mm's from somewhere along with tanks and weights and brave the slightly cooler water on that coast. Our other activities might include mtn biking and kayaking or any other outdoorsy things. I see Big Sur is in that area as well a Tahoe, i hear they are both good for biking. What are the bays like for kayaking? We do need something to do on my no-fly day on monday, so could still do that, although the mountains inland might be slightly out of the question due to altitude.

So what say you locals, any options, recommendations, thoughts?

Whew! I think I am a little dizzy from reading the post above. The cliff-note version of my buddy's post is this: We will be up near the Sacramento area on the weekend of November 27th. Any suggestions for diving, kayaking, hiking, mountain-biking, sight-seeing, etc.? Thanks ahead of time!
Rebecca :)

What she said ;)

Simon
you gave me some great advice in the florida thread a while back about diving in the Orlando area, now i can return the favor(I didn't get to dive due to hurricane Jean, unfortunately!!!)

i dive most weekends in Monterey, there are some great beach dives down there, breakwater is a very popular one, most OW classes go there for their check out dives, Other dives in Monterey itself, include Lover's and Mcabee, both good dives, not very deep, Kelp should be getting lighter at that time of the year. water temps aren't so much warmer in summer that i would put off diving Monterey until summer. South of Monterey you have MOnastery which you mentioned, and i love diving, and Pt Lobos, which is incredible, but you need to make reservations, they only have a limitied number of dive teams per day, during the week is usually open, weekends are busy, IMHO, the two best are Lobos and Monastery, Monastery can be very difficult, or if you hit it right, like last weekend, it was a pleasure, the shore break was no higher than a foot at most, and 40-50ft of viz, it was incredible, as long as you don't hit a storm in november, you should be okay...

i don't know anything about diving in Tahoe, never dove there, just be aware that there likely be snow in tahoe at that stage, we were snowboarding at thansgiving last year, so something else to think about...

send me a pm if you have any specific questions on Monterey, i can recommend shops/hotels if you need them, there are some very knowlegable monterey divers on here as well that i'm sure will voice their considerable expertise...

i should just be finished my Rescue course before that, if you need a local guide i probably would be free to dive...

Thanks for that summary. You and we werent able to dive due to yet another hurricane, seems to be the story of this summer!! What did you mean by kelp being light, do you mean it thins out seasonally or something? I hope we are past any algae troubles at that time of the year as well. I have generally read Monestary as a place to avoid until you are more experienced in shore break - ie i wouldnt touch diving it unless the conditions were ideal, but i was hoping that the other spots were reasonable and less challenging - which it sounds like they might be ;) You say the temps dont change much, are we talking mid or upper 50's or higher/lower?

I wasnt talking about diving Tahoe etc, more about other activities that we could do during our no fly day and in case we wuss out due to the cold after the first day ;) As for a local guide, that would be great - there is still time to arrange the exact details and accommodation as well as flights, just looking around for the general feel of the area and potential sites/conditions.

kelp tends to be not as thick during the winter months, so yup it is seasonal, water temps should be low 50's although i dove last february on one dive and it was 48..

the other sites are fine, if you don't want to dive Monastery i recommend getting a reservation for Lobos, check out
http://pt-lobos.parks.state.ca.us/scuba/scuba.shtml

oh yeah, and if it has starting snowing in Tahoe by thanksgiving, any activites up there are going to invole snow, well the ones i know about anyway!!

So does Pt Lobos SP cover all the other sites around that peninsular? I will take a closer look at the underwater maps, although they appear very helpful!

Looks like we might have to break out the 7mm rentals (or get drysuits and used to them pretty soon - not likely on budget!).

I checked the calendar and all but the sunday are taken - that doesnt mean i couldnt stay a little longer and dive the monday - leaving for Orlando on tuesday though! So at least we could get sunday and monday in at these sites, but that is kind of tough having all those dates taken up already!!!

Monterey is definately a great place to go diving if you have time. I also would recommend getting the 7mm wetsuits since it will make your dives more enjoyable. If you are flying into Sacramento, just PM me and I'll hook you up with a buddy of mine over at Dolphin Scuba who will take good care of you guys.

As far as Tahoe goes. The winter months get pretty cold up there but it is definately beautiful and may be worth a trip if you have time. I wouldn't be diving up there without drysuits and the proper gear, but it is still a nice place to hang out if there is time. I wish I could get out to meet and dive with your guys but I'll be heading to Maui on the 27th so unfortunately I won't be around.

Good luck,

Thanks for the help Scott, might call on you for that wetsuit rental assistance in the near future. As for the range of options off that coast, what are we looking at. I understand that Monterey is a great spot, but of course by the time we decide exactly what is going on one or both days that are still free might be full. What other options do we have off those shores (from just south of Monterey to north of SF - say Fort Bragg or so)? We dont mind travelling around a little (like 2-3 hours each way) to get some diving in, but i'd like to have an idea of what is available should this prime area be booked out.

Checking out your SAUE site, i saw a link to dive sites along the coast, will study this carefully tonight or some night soon and come up with a game plan to run by you guys unless i hear recommendations before that comes about. Hopefully not all of these require booking 2 months ahead of time ;) We have similar problems with access to our state park springs. Talking of things with lights and reels - any sea cave action over there? I would imagine there arent any solution springs like we have here, but worth the asking.
