if he used 100 % at 40' how much pressure drop from a 3000 fill would their be till he blacked out?
Deco plan would most likely have been to switch to 50% at 70 feet. Stops at 70,60 and 50 would be a few minutes so not much gas used. (And all of this is meaningless if the starting pressure was not known)
I'm sure it's quite possible to breathe 100% O2 at 70 feet (~ pO2 of 3.1) for a few minutes.
This is obviously all total speculation,but breathing the wrong gas IS a real easy way to kill yourself.
