I'm looking at booking a trip to Alor in July 2025. Sorting through what looks like 2 different flight transfers once in Bali or Jakarta is a bit confusing. Any assistance would be helpful. Also how strict are they on the 40lb ber bag? Thanks in advance.

I'm going with Delta so 50lb for international, but once there the transfer flights are 44lbs from CGK to Alor. We are switching from our 13lb Scuba Pro bags to the Osprey 90's at 7.5 lbs.

We met again... haha

My experience has been they are generally pretty strict. Some of the carriers have additional allowances for scuba gear. Search the forums for domestic flights. I usually find good info on here. Centrals, Dan, and a few others have a lot more knowledge and experience on the subject and all other things Indo.

It can take some time but scroll up and down the board and look for topics of interest. Plenty of good info and time/money saving tips.

I will be going to and from Alor in September. I can add more info after that.

Garuda gives you a scuba allowance but be prepared to open your bag and show the gear. If it is a mixed bag then put scuba gear on top. Lion no allowance for sports gear. Sriwijaya Air actually charges you more for special handling charge of scuba gear. All carriers allow you to pre-pay kg if you will be over the allotment. Much easier to pre-pay then to have to pay at airport.

One of my potential connections is on Lion, I didn't see where they don't allow sports gear on their site.

@Stndinup, I think you may have misread "Lion no allowance for sports gear". Means no special free allowance. If you are going to be just 6 lbs over, just pay up when you are booking the ticket. It is pretty reasonable, rates are based on each 5kg overweight I think.

Regarding CGK or Bali, I think CGK is better, since from Bali, you have to overnight at Kupang. But I don't know your international flight pattern, and also, things may change in July 2025.

All of this may have changed in recent months, but this is usually the case...

1. Unless I am way wrong, which I am often am, the only option to Alor is on Wings Air through Kupang. Wings is part of the Lion Group. Batik is part of the same deal. You can count on them weighing your bags and charging accordingly. Be certain to buy accurate weight in advance. Paying on the spot will suck.

2. To make the only flight to Alor from Kupang, one must either take a 2:00 AM flight from Jakarta or fly the day before and spend the night in Kupang.

3. There is really only one flight a day out of Alor to Kupang. They sell two, but unless there is some weird need, they consolidate everything to one morning flight per day. Keep that in mind when booking connections from Kupang.

Alor is awesome, but the challenge of getting to and from is for sure a huge factor as to why it stays off the radar.

Hmm would you have any info on the ferries Kupang-Alor? I am looking at spending month+ with Bali as a base, but getting to Alor from there indeed seems to require overnight. Plus you are stuck with Lion Air ;/

I really don't. If you were to push me, I might say I am far more comfortable with Wings Air than local ferries.
