PM Speargirl, she is a sweet lady and the condos are wonderful. You will be much happier staying at the condo than at a hotel. Then ask her who would be best for a snorkling trip.
Personally I like the Islamorada. We have stayed at Pines and Palms and Breezy Palms. Both are close to Bud and Marys and you can take a boat out of there to dive or snorkel. If you have your own boat there are several reefs close by. The closest one that I feel is the best is Hens and Chickens. Huge coral formations here. We usually take our own boat so we're able to visit several reefs. I believe the dive boat out of Bud and Marys does Alligator Reef which is OK....not a lot of great coral but tons of fish.

We stayed at Ocean Point Suites in Tavarnier last year. Great place! I couldn't believe how nice it was, especially considering the price. They have a real nice salt water swimming pool too.
