What excercises should be done to benifit the strength of your legs for diving?

 :54:

Any excercise that increases your overall fitness level will benifit diving. As for a specific exercise for diving, i would have to say swimming. Weight training, running, treadmill, etc will increase leg strenght and overall fitness, but the motion is so different they wont do much to reduce muscle fatige associated with diving (if that is the concern). Actually the best excercise would be more diving.

None of those mentioned above. I do weight training mixed with cycling and diving at least every other weekend when the weather is considerate to me :D

Actually, running is fine for developing good leg stamina for any sport. Forget about the motion. The motion does not need to mimick diving. Running creates lean muscles that are efficient. Treadmills are just an indoor version of this and if the treadmill is a poor quality one, you may develop problems in the knees and shins. Stick to the roads if you can - wx permitting. Weightlifting creates mass that is not condusive to range of motion. Weightlifters don't make good runners, cyclers, divers, etc... There is a type of weights that you can do to augment running to strengthen the calves, quads, and hamstrings without developing mass. Basically, you do lunges, knee bends, and toe raises while holding light weights and do a lot of repetitions.

Again, don't worry about whether the exercise mimicks the motion in the dive kick. If that were the case, then cycling would be awful for divers since bicycle kicks are for Force Fins wearers(troll). Just doing exercise 3-4 times a week for an hour or so including aerobic and cardivascular will make you not only healthier, but stronger in the water. Keep hydrated, limber, and healthy and you'll dive without getting tired or cramped.

I found this new exercise... I now get up to adjust the volume and change the channel on the tube. :D

When they say I am not in shape, I usually point out that "round" is indeed a shape.

dang it... i got into diving because it didn't involve any work, and now you guys want me to excercise?

besides, i think carrying the tanks back and forth from
the water is excercise enough.

Ya beat me to it Mempilot :-) I just wanted to second this advice.. Bulk is not what you're looking for, but exercise that increases efficiency and stamina. Running (although this can typically be very hard on the knees) and cycling are great. There are also several martial arts out there that focus on speed and stamina training (Filipino Arnis, French Savat, and most of the hundreds of Chinese Kung-fu styles) which can be a much more entertaining way of exercise than a gym.

Just my 2cents

While I do enjoy running and playing tennis, I do not think that those excercises work the legs in the right way to help in diving. The pounding can also be hard on the knees and hips. Although, any excercise is better than none though.

That is why I suggest swimming with fins. Either freediving fins or Mares Quattros (something very stiff). Start easy and build up to a good pace both under and on top of the water. Gives the legs a great workout and improves stamina also.

Helps me in other sports too.

Enjoy the ride
