will a 5lb line have a chance of breaking with the fishes that we intend to catch? I want a sporting chance with them :)

if you reel them in properly you can reel in a fish weighing 1.5 kilos.

though the fishes we reel in have average weights of 500 grams.

5lb = 2.2 kilos

Pao,
correct me if im wrong, but if you have a 2.2kilo test line (5lb) and you reel in a 1.5 kilo fish, reeling it in properly wouldn't matter since the fish is way under the test weight of the line?

it may break if you jerk the line too much. jerking (by the angler or by the fish) may coincide at the same time resulting in a higher strain on the line that may exceed the lines rating. not withstanding any snags that may happen. any sudden snags at this point wout beak the line as the weight would be concentrated at the snag point instead of being spread along the entire line.

so a heavy fish on a long line maybe reeled in , however as the line gets shorter the load on the line increases as a shorter line results in less elasticity increasing the potential for a break thats why you have to tire the fish before reeling them in on a light monofilament line.

but even if you get a 2 kilo or more fish. if you are able to reel in the fish you may bring it to you as long as you don't lift it from the water at which point you should use the net with an extended handle to scoop the fish out of the water instead of using the line to lift the fish from the water.

to avoid breaking the line, you have to "feel" for when the fish would break for a dash, you should release the tension of your reel at this point. this may be done with a good quality reel. the one sold in the streets would not have the bearings to be able to do this.

If you get a reel try to get a spinning reel with good balance and bearing assisted pivots.

This talk about fishing got me thinking. Is there deep sea sportfishing in the PI?

I believe there is. I have a friend in the province who does this and was the one who was selling his boat. There is also a number of fishing yatchs at subic and the manila yatch club, so I guess there is :)

yes there is. the take off point is at Laiya, san juan batangas then they take a boat and go trolling.

they get sail fishes, tulingans, etc. using around 10 inches long bait fish.

they do also Norte sport fishing and down south around Cagayan De oro

they have a tournament every year regular participant is villavicencio of triple V,

Cool. I've been wanting to try out this sport and I regret not doing it while I was still in Florida.
