They are real common. I have just never known what they are.
 
I want to say that it's a red hind or spotted hind. I believe it's in the same family as groupers. Can't find my fish book at the moment tho..

The fish most definitely is a member of the grouper genus Epinephelus. Two species of this genus look quite similar, the red and rock hind.

If the large dark blotches/saddles on the back that appear in your photo are actual colorations of the fish and not merely shadows (it's hard for me to tell), then it's a rock hind (Epinephelus adscensionis). If they are in fact shadows, then it's a red hind (Epinephelus guttatus).

This is unequivocally a Rock Hind.
