Aside from the deplorable conditions that many of the people live in, Roatan is very beautiful.
On a return trip from a dive, our boat went between the shipping yard and Barefoot Cay. We were considering staying at Barefoot Cay and after seeing what we saw, I AM SO GLAD WE DIDN'T STAY THERE!!
I have seen garbage dumps with less refuse than what was floating in the water and piled up on land around Barefoot Cay. In fact, I was so stunned that I didn't think to grab the camera out of the soak barrel until the last minute. I am not kidding when I say that it would take the better part of a year, with a full crew, to clean up the mess.
I started a writeup on Fantasy Island today. To sum FI up in 2 words: "I'm ambivalent". I took photos and notes about the place for the members here.
My lovely wife isn't the best traveler, but I believe that she enjoyed her time at FI. I was diving 4-a-day and didn't get the chance to go over to CCV for a comparison. Shame on me. However, I can say that CCV looked like a ghost town. Probably due to the hurricane. FI was pretty empty as well. I would estimate that there were about 50-75 guests.
You'll just have to wait for the review!
