there are some great wrecks just 30 miles north of you. you dont need to go all the way to alpena for awesome diving. alpenas nice though. have fun and post a follow up when you get back

dont get me wrong, alpena is awesome, i lived near there for a while. just didnt know if you knew how much good diving you had closer to you. i work at the shop in port sanilac every once in a while on the weekends. they run charters for $80 or $85, http://www.miadventurescuba.com the same guy that owns the one in novi, john, runs the one in port sanilac too. check out http://www.rectecdivecharters.com too. gary venet's boat, the sylvia ann, is awesome and he is a hell of a nice guy. i think hes still charging $70. ive never been in the river either but i hear theres some great stuff to see. im a little nervous about the current and all the traffic through there.

jrockosaurus,

I was checking out your website; Cool pic's. Can you tell me a bit about Traders Mine? It looks like an interesting place. How deep? and how many miles; say from, Lansing? Thanks.

are you kidding me? I have been trying to get in-touch with the guy that operates that shop (Port Sanilac) but nobody is ever there. I even left a business card in the door and asked him to call...nothing. I would really like some info about what is available in Port Sanilac. I have been OW certified since January and have been pretty frustrated with what seems to be a very fragmented diving community around here. Kind of like if your not an old seadog, stay home.

I was at Port Sanilac last week (vacation) and we dove the New York (twice), Col. A.B. Wiliams, Nothr Star, Mary Alice B and the F.B. Gardner. I had my boat docked in Port Sanilac until Thursday then I took it to Lexington through Sunday. The dive shop in Port Sanilac (Four Fathoms) was closed all week! I had to drive down to Port Huron to get fills. The guy that used to own the shop lived upstairs and you could call him and he would give you fills just about anytime. the new owners never sem to be there, even on week-ends!

thanks. traders mine is one of my favorite places ive ever dove. unfortunately, it is just a quarry on somones private property. those pictures of the mine are actually the backyard of the person who owns the property. the depth is about 100' and the water is always about 40 degrees on the bottom. its in the u.p. by iron mountain. i found out about the place through the guy that runs the dive shop in marquette. the viz is was around 20' or so and its pretty dark on the bottom. incredible place though and its a shame that only a few people a year get to dive it - it makes me feel a lot cooler talking about it though.

call up gary at rectec (his cell # is on his website) and he will take good care of you. he has a calendar on his website too that is always up to date if you want to see what hes running to. hes a little more consistent since hes retired and does the charter thing for a living now. he lists the depths on the calendar too (dont know what you feel comfortable hitting since you just got your cert). he runs a nice operation.
