This past friday my buddy and i dove the Ely wreck in Two Harbors Minnesota. conditions were great. vis 25'-30, at depth temp 58+, max depth 32'.
i'm sure veteran wreck divers would find it quite boring, but i thought it was cool. the ship was built in 1869, a potion of the cargo hold was still intact, but not being wreck certified, I/we didn't penetrate the wreck. although i did stick my head in to see what was there.
i found myself admiring the workmanship. imagining the size of the mast that fit into the mast hole. wondering how long it took someone to carve the deck knees. she was built by hand and the men obviously took pride in their work.. unfortunate that they (modern vessels and those responsible for repairing the breakwall) didn't treat her with the respect she deserved.
2nd question/statement; I am 5'5", 185 lbs; diving 2 piece 6.5 mil, boots, hood, gloves, zeale BC, 85 aluminum tank, Mares Avanti fins... i started diving this equipment wearing 30lbs, which i knew was way too much...
on the above dive i decided i was going to drop weight.. 1st 1/2 of the dive, i dropped to 26lbs (3lbs each side in the rear trim pockets and the rest in the WI pockets) I noticed that if i tried to hover, my feet would sink and at about 20'+ i was having a difficult time maintaining position.
2nd 1/2 of dive i dropped to 24lbs (2lbs each side of my tank in the trim pockets, the rest in the WI pockets), trim seemed to be much better, feet didn't sink and i could maintain position with my breath.
I did a weight check at the end of the dive and with 700psi and breathing i would bob head out of water to about 1/2 foot below the surface.
i'm thinking i could drop another 1 or 2 pounds.? or after a few more dives, could i drop even more weight?
does this sound about right?????
this weighting thing is difficult to figure, but being over weight is very stressful and really takes away from the enjoyment of the dive.
