This will be our first trip to the keys (key largo) just want all the info i can get for the diving in april I.E. water temp, site not to miss and places to eat and see

Hi Mike

I just came back from KL about a week ago. While I wasnt out sightseeing much one place I would surely recommend checking out food wise in Ms Macs Kitchen.....awesome food !

Mike,
Key Largo offers a great place to dive/stay,As it seems your a new diver.Molasses reef will be on your list of dives .
*****Make sure to plan your dives with a charter that will do dives within your dive experience for **THE DAY YOU PLAN TO DIVE! I will not promote any dive boat or operation so many good ones and some ok ones, so ask around on the board so not to get dropped on a patch of sand for $75.00 I like small boats 6 pacs.some places first to book calls the dive.

Plan activities or have a place were the NON-Divers family can do things while your out diving, you will be out for a major part of the day!
Remember when getting on US1 right turns work the best my tip of the day!

Water temps will be mid 70's like 75ish >
Have a back up plan for the day if winds blow you out!

Places to eat Craig's has a great fish sandwich its nothing fancy but good!

A great place to do a day trip is Robbie's,I coined the phrase many years back best buck spent in the Key's now its $2or $3 I guess inflation!!!!!!!!Beer's ICE COLD,Feeding the Tarpon Priceless!
Robbie's of Islamorada: Offering the widest diversity of recreational marine activities in Islamorada, Florida Keys - Offshore, Backcountry and Partyboat Fishing, Boat Rentals, Guided Tours, and Tarpon Feeding.

1. Make sure to visit the Florida Conch's section the locals are a pool of info!Florida Conch Divers - ScubaBoard

2.Make sure to tour the John Pennekamp State park, a great part of the day can be spent on the grounds do a picnic lunch! and they do offer diving too!
Welcome to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park - Key Largo, Florida Keys

3.This is a great place to go to the first show of the day EARLY A.M. Its fun for all if you have kids have em sit up front raise their hands and get a kiss from a dolphin or sea lion PRICELESS!
SWIM WITH DOLPHINS, in the Florida Keys at THEATER of the SEA
I am sure more will chime in on the conch section, have a great trip as were down in a month or so,
dive safe.

Moneysavr hit a lot of good points there. I happen to be in KL right now, and for food, the fish house and fish house encore is great. Also, for some fine dining, Marker 88 was excelent!
The wife and I were here 8 yrs ago in April when we got certified. Water was near 80*. Warm enough that we only bought shorties at the time.

What's the ages of your family members?
My boy is 5 and he really enjoyed snorkeling the Grecian rocks with Daddy yesterday. Today we're trying Theatre of the sea.
If you wanna see the vid of my boy and I snorkeling (I was wearing a tank) Lemme know and I'll post the facebook link here.
It was filmed with the gopro HD, cheap camera, money WELL spent!

Some of my favorite experiences in Key Largo have been staying and diving at Amy Slates Amoray Dive Resort at MM 104
and eating at Rib Daddys near MM 103.

John Pennekamp State Park is great for the whole family.

For groceries I would go to Publix.

If you have cash to burn and would like to get certified as a Aquanaut you can stop by Jules Undersea Lodge and spend
a day living, sleeping and eating in your very own underwater habitat and leave with a new c-card from NAUI or PADI.

I was there yesterday enjoying the perfect temperatures while the rest of the east coast was being snowed under.

thanks everyone for the advice. DM i have looked at amy slates and it does look very nice, and Moneysavr all those things are going on our list

I certainly second DMDavid's post - we have been running group trips to Amoray Dive Resort since 2004, 8 or 9 trips a year, and have found them to be very accommodating and thoughtful with our divers and non-divers alike. Big spacious boat, attentive and fun crew, and just good people all around! And Rib Daddy's is a good suggestion also.

As a part time resident in the Keys, my viewpoint appears to be a bit different from a couple of other posters.

I would only recommend Amy Slates (Amoray Dive Center) if you are looking for true one stop motel/dive operation. Their dive boat while stable offers a wet ride. The "resort" is on the Bay Side which does provide fantastic sunsets and place to lie around, but the rooms are a long in the tooth.

If you have non-diving members in your group, I would recommend the Holiday Inn (nice pool) and then you have a choice of dive ops including the HMS Minnow (six pack) or Ocean Divers down canal. Multiple places to eat and drink within walking distance (and Divers Direct is across the street so you can spend your money).

If you don't mind driving to the boat Conch Republic at MM 91ish in Tavernier is another great option.

Mike I forgot to tell you about my favorite room at Amy Slates, it's W2B (The Green Moray) see link for the location of this apartment.
W2B faces west for sunsets that will make your evening a memorable one.

In the image above W2B is the upstairs room just over the dive boat.

If you don't stay there at least stop by and look at it for future reference.

If you do stay give me your honest opinion of it when you can.
