(Oahu In the winter, the North Shore diving sites off O'ahu will be off-limits due to swells. That's some of the best shore diving on the island. The west side is the other shore diving option which should be OK then, depending on weather.
Honolulu Scuba Company (HSC) reverses their Deep/shallow dives - their deep water wreck dive is at 12:30pm and their shallow dives are in the morning. Many dive shops, including HSC does a 2-tank night dive where 1 tank is wreck dive before sunset to the Sea Tiger, and second dive is night time shallow reef. The sea tiger at dusk is awesome.
(Big Island The manta dive off Kona (night dive) was an incredible experience for me. Kona is a cute beach/surfer town, but small and quiet, and is also a great place to dive from. I personally would use that day to do some diving since you can still see and enjoy the town, and you'll still have the day in Hilo to experience the less touristy and more nature side of the island.
So those are 3 options for afternoon and night dives.
