Im looking at a rental camper road trip early next year. Im thinking 3 weeks in Australia and one in NZ or mybe just 4 in Australia. Feb, Mar, April time frame. Im pretty wide open for avilablity right now. Id really like to see east and west coasts. Any recomendations on best times and driving routes?
Oh ya, where are those beaches with three girls for every guy I keep hearing aboout?;)

australia is a huge country. almost the size of amercia but with only 21mil compared to your 300mill people

hubby and i talk about doing a road trip and what we will do is 3 weeks maybe starting at Nrth Stradebroke Island or diving HMAS Brisbane then down to byron bay, Fish Rock before heading to sydney

keeping in mind that April is easter so schooll holidays and its going to be either expensive, booked out or crowded

to get to the west coast/perth will take about 6hrs flying by memory and no idea how long to drive it and to drive from perth to ningaloo would take about 10hrs drive time i think

It's a start. Thanks for the easter warning, I forget these things. Rember I live in Alaska which is half the size of the US and has 670,000 people. Im used to driving for two hours and not seeing another car or town. Thats what Im looking for.
 
hheheheh - oh you will see people on the east coast!!! about 5mil people in sydney/suburbs all crammed in ;)
 
If that's what you're looking for, the West Coast has it ;)

If you only have three weeks, I wouldn't try to do both coasts. Pick one and see it.

Ningaloo Reef is a 12 hour drive from Perth. You can fly via Skywest.com.au as it's the only airline to service the Ningaloo and the flights route through Perth. It isn't particularly cheap most of the time.

The West Coast will keep you busy and your time frame is the best dive time for most of the state. The whale sharks arrive in the very last days of March or first days of April on the Ningaloo Reef, so you need to keep that in mind if you are coming for them. There is plenty of great diving here on the Ningaloo without the whale sharks so it's definitely worth coming no matter when you visit. Western Australia has very diverse diving environments so you could see a great variety of things with your three weeks. And there's lots of non-diving things to do.

The East Coast gets my same recommendation - just do it, there's plenty to do.

If you absolutely need to do both coasts in one visit of three weeks, you're going to have to do a lot of homework and prioritize. It can be done, but it's a bit of a whirlwind and you will miss out on many of the awesome things that an area has to offer.
 
I know 3-4 weeks is pushing it. I plan on diving a couple of times a week and taking in the sites the rest of the time. Im not realy into city stuff and would prefer to see more small town a real life things. Whale sarks are my holy grail so thank for the tip on that. If I hear there is one in the area Im U/W all day.
So given all that, east vs west?
