Greetings,

If I certify this year, I will be a single-solo diver so thought it a good time to introduce myself. As a travel/adventure seeker, I will be in Key West 8/13 - 27 if anyone has some good advice for a first time diver. Does anyone here know if online pre-open water course ...

http://www.onlinescubalessons.com/store/corres.html#bwana

is worthwhile or otherwise a hassle to transfer to local open water testing for certificate?

I look forward to hearing from the group!

Regards,

Linda

I don't have any first hand experience of "online courses" so someone else will have to jump at that

but I'd like to welcome you to the boards!!

Hi Linda and welcome to ScubaBoard. Don't know about "online" OW certification, but their site looks legit and the FAQ answers alot of your concerns. Go for it, and be sure to report back on how it goes. You might talk with the referral dive instructor about going this route. Do you plan on doing your pool work and checkout dives in Key west?
Good luck on your certification.
David

Welcome to the board Linda.
I have to tell you, I don't have a good feeling about this site. They seem to purposely avoid telling you which agency they teach under. You really need the guideance and help of a good instructor when learning scuba. I would suggest you look around locally find a good instructor to either do a complete course with or at a mimimum do a referal (all the classroom and pool work) with a known cert agency (PADI/NAUI/SSI/YMCA) before heading off the do your cheack out dives. If for no other reason than to make sure you have a mask and fins you are comfortable with. Scuba training is life support training, I don't care to trust a computer to teach me those sort of things.
As a bare minimum, I would at least call some dive shops you are thinking of using in the Keys and see if they will even reconize the certificate you are susposed to get from these people.

Welcome to the board!

Joe

I just cannot see how an online scuba course is going to do much for you. You still have to do the pool training, then the check-out dives with the appropriate agency's Instructor. Are you in Vegas? There are many dive shops there who can serve you better.

And for Key West, get a rental car and drive 20 miles up the Overseas Hiway to dive with Capt Jim Wyatt. Much better diving, and his references are mind boggling. :silly:

PM me if I can help you find your way around here...
