First Time Trip to Flower Gardens - Essential Items?

I'm hoping to make my first dive trip to the Flower Gardens on September 22. I haven't been able to dive this year and for the cost/dive and # dives without missing any days of work, it seems like the Flower Gardens are hard to pass up on for someone living in Austin.

I hear the waters can get a little rough out there. Can the experienced divers recommend any essentials to take along to try to ensure a good experience?

A whistle, mirror, SMB, pills for motion sickness, extra towels. Maybe take some book, chess, or cards to spend time in the evenings.
