Won a trip to an all-inclusive for 6 days in Cancun. Though I've been diving for 30+ years, I have never been to this area. I can take 3 day trips, 1 night and want to get in a wreck/reef as one of the days. I would like to use an operation that knows what experienced divers want to see/do. Recommendations??? Suggestions?!?!

Cenotes. Must do cenotes. Do many many cenotes.

Reef dives are nice - but to a certain extent a reef dive is a reef dive. Cenotes are unique to the area and the light effects plus the cave formations and jungle location are spell binding. I'll be posting a trip report within the day to read.

As you are a truly experienced diver, Jorge at Scorpio Divers is probably someone you should be thinking of.

And definitely try some cenotes

.

YES! If you've never been to the Yucatan Peninsula, the cenotes are a must. Incredible visibility, formations (stalactites, stalagmites, flows tones) that will awe you, embedded fossils... the cenotes are unlike anything you've ever seen. It really is an experience from another world!

Diving in the cenotes (caverns) means that you'll be in an overhead environment but it is not a restricted environment (meaning at least 2 divers can dive side by side at all times). In the really large areas, it seems like you are just floating along on air because the water is so clear you can't even see it!

Have a great holiday in Mexico!

I just spent 3 days diving here in Cancun. I dove with Scuba Cancun. I can say that I was seriously disappointed with this shop. The shop dates from 1980 and the gear looks like it. The regulators are all beat up and dirty. On my second day, I went through 4 regulators before I found one that didn't leak. Then on our first dive the regulator was leaking as I inhaled, so I got some sea water. I swapped out to the octopus. On the third day they gave me a regulator that had green corrosion inside. I was aghast at it's condition. The BC's have seen better days and many are patched. Their masks are all the same, one size fits all and uncomfortable. Their fins are slip on kind, and most are worn out. Our first 2 days the crew and guides were fantastic. Good people Katie and Lars. The last day I got Ricardo, and our group of three all were advanced and Ricardo cut our dives short. He kept us at 40 minutes and we all had 900+ psi still. We complained and he gave us a BS story about nitrogen loading and DCS. We all had computers and were all fine. Another issue was the surface interval times, which were kept at 30-40 minutes. Don't expect any drinks or fruit on the boat, only water from the cooler is available. There are no rest rooms on any of their boats, guys are OK to hang it out but ladies are out of luck. If you're going to use Scuba Cancun, bring your own gear as I wish I had. It wasn't economical or convenient for me this trip making 3 stops and traveling literately around the world from the Mid East. You expect more from an operator, and this was the worst dive shop I've seen yet. Over the 3 days I hit two spots twice (horseshoe and puerta neigra). If I were you stay away from this operator.

I would like to give a plug and shout out to our friend Alvaro with Always Diving...

Alvaro is a highly experienced diver who also happens to be a great guy. He is detail oriented and naturally goes the extra mile to make sure everything is just right. Alvaro took us to the Palancar reef where my wife completed her open water certification. I am an experienced diver and Alvaro was able to keep all of our dives quite interesting, and safe. In spite of Alvaro's excellent technical ability and knowledge I want to give him special consideration for helping my wife work through a bit of dive anxiety. I highly recommend him to any level diver. As Alvaro said at some point during our trip, "you come to Mexico for a vacation, and wind up making friends". This is certainly true with Alvaro and we can't wait to team up with him for our next dive.

Max and Jean

And another for Alvaro from AlwaysDiving. We've done about 50 dives with him off Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and the Cenotes. He's awesome.
