Hey All,

My wife and I are heading down to San Diego for our first dives in the area Sept 18-21. Where would you suggest we stay to be close to either La Jolla or charters for wreck alley and area...I have no idea how close each is to the other?! Will be researching over the next few days.

It's our 13th wedding anniversary and we are celebrating by getting wet in SD!

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

dive safe all!

Jeff

The beach diving is between LaJolla Cove and Shores with some additional sites along the coast south of there around the peninsula. The boat dives are out of South Mission Bay or just west of the Airport closer to down town. So it depends on if you want to boat dive or beach dive.

LaJolla is, um, pricey, but beautiful and would make for a nice romantic stay. LaJolla Cove, if the swell is out of the south is awesome day or night. LaJolla Shores is like Redondo Beach, a deep underwater canyon best seen by starlight at night. There are several other nearby dive sites that are good between the Cove and the Shore. I have not heard of many beach dives south of Hospital Point, but that does not mean the locals don't have some, I just have not heard of them.

Divebums - A San Diego Dive Website will hook you up with dive site information.

Awesome! As always thanks for the info Pasley! I hope we'll get our schedules together for a dive soon!

There are hotels on the beach at La Jolla Shores. La Jolla Shores Motel & La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club are two that I know of. The Dana Inn & the Hyatt Regency are closest to the Mission Bay dive boats (Dive Connections, Lois Ann, Dive Bliss, Marissa, Humbolt). I think the only dive boats that still operate out of Point Loma are the multi-day boats (Horizons Dive Charters), the rest all moved to Mission Bay to be closer to the Yukon & Wreck Alley.

It's hard to beat the Tennis Club for a romantic setting, their restaurant, the Marine Room, is right on the beach. It's about a 15 minute drive from there to Mission Bay. Still, you really could stay anywhere from Ocean Beach to La Jolla and not have that much travel to do either for the boats or the shores.

Definitely try to do a dive at La Jolla Cove if the viz is good, it's a shallow dive but there is tons of sea life.

Great! thanks for that! We'll have to mix diving and a nice dinner too!

dive safe,

On my trip to La Jolla, Im staying off of Roosevelt Ave in National City. Is it a bad area just to use as a crash pad?

National City can be a little rough, but Roosevelt Ave is in a relatively quite area, kind of a mixed residential / industrial zone near the freeway. I wouldn't be concerned to much about it.

Thanks Bishop.

I second the Beach and Tennis Club, particularly after the end of summer. It is an older property, but great.
