How much should it cost to assemble a new reg setup? I got a great deal on reg, octo , and SPG online and went to my LDS a to buy a Swift AI transmitter. They charge $75 to put everything together and bench test it. Sound about right?
Do you own a crescent wrench and some allen keys? If not, consider them part of your basic dive gear and buy some.

Sounds high to me. My shop charges $24.95 for a bench test. Assembly should be something you can do yourself. Ask them the charge to do a bench test only. Then, take the difference and get some tools. A set of allen wrenches, a thin jaw adjustable wrench, and an assortment of o-rings and appropriate grease should be what you need to get started.

You bought the transmitter there and they still want to charge you $75 to spend five minutes attaching hoses and checking IP?

I guess everybody’s got to make money somehow. Now, if the regulator needed adjustment, like an IP or cracking effort adjustment and that was included, then it’s starting to get to the still-expensive-but-reasonable territory.

I’m just very glad that I don’t ever have to walk into a dive shop and say ‘fix my regulator for me’.

I believe that he bought the regulator piece by piece somewhere else. If he bought everything at their shop, I believe they should do it free of charge. If not I'd charge at least $75 for the trouble.

Hey, can you assemble and test this regulator that i didn't buy at your store for free?

It is not unreasonable for the shop to change the customer. It is also important to learn how to do some of these basic tasks if you are going to buy your equipment independent of an LDS.

The guy bought a transmitter (I assume he's talking about an AI transmitter) from the dive shop. Maybe I'm a sucker, but if I owned a dive shop and someone bought a transmitter from me, I would gladly install it on his regulator regardless of where he bought that regulator, and as a courtesy, happily install the LP hoses (it takes all of two minutes) and test it for him.

Personally, I think if you are reliant on an LDS to service, maintain, or assemble your gear then you should also buy your gear from that shop. Building a relationship with the LDS can be valuable, and bringing in a bunch of newly purchased online regulators is sort of crude. The shop is totally within their rights to charge extra for any time they spend on your online purchases.

Great way to lose a customer

Do online shops like DGX and Deep 6 send their regulator packages pre-assembled and tested ?
