When my wife and I were out in Laguna beach back in June I had talked her into spending one of our days out at Catalina Island. This was the first time I had brought my own gear on a diving trip. I did a couple dives on a Thursday and thought it was just awesome. The kelp forest, the wrecks, big lobsters and the vis was 10x better than the quarrys I go to...and to top it all off the water was not what I consider cold. I just wore my 7mm sans gloves and hoody and was very comfortable down below the thermocline.

On my first dive I had gotten hung up on some kelp vines but no big deal other than my DM just keeps going and makes a right turn out of eyesight. I get myself loose and go looking for him. Here he is hung up himself...hahahaha (I did give him heck about it though later).

Second Dive was paired up with a gal who said that she had 3+ years experience with lots of dives. Well let me tell you, I should have been paid for taking care of her. She consistently lost weights, camera, etc which I fetched back for her. I let her go ahead of me and constantly watched out for her. Not once did she look back to see how I was doing?

The DM I don't think really knew what was going on as he was doing his own thing. (BTW this was a different DM than the first one). Regardless, I enjoyed the heck out of both dives and look forward to one day going out that way again.

Thanks to everyone on this board, you all make diving so darn enjoyable and the knowledge that you impart is just fantastic especially for a newbie like me.
