Ok, I just finished my open water certification and am shopping for my first computer. I want a console because I'm comfortable with them, and I want Nitrox in case I go that route in the future. In class, we used Suunto Favors, which were fine but no nitrox.
So, I have narrowed the field to these:

Sherwood Logic, $280
Tusa IQ-600, $290
Oceanic Data Plus 2, $315
Genesis React, $315
Suunto Vyper, $369

I'm leaning toward the Sherwood because it seems to offer a lot for the price. However, it doesn't automatically turn on with water contact like the Favor does. I'm most interested in ease of use, but I live in a small town with one dive shop that only carries Suunto so I can't try or even look at all of them. I'll be buying online.
So, any advice?

We went with the oceanic versa pro as our first computer. The price was right and it does nitrox as well. We were trying for a beuchat computer that fits our console but after reading about the versa pro we went for that choice.
We're going on our first dive with it on April 15, we'll let you know how it did.:)

Do you want conservative or liberal?

How old are you and what kind of shape are you in?

This is a tough one but having been through the whole learning curve......And uncle Pug would agree you are better off with two timers and tables but that is a whole different can "o" worms:wink:

I recommend the suunto vyper!!!

Why Nitrox capable
computer down loadable

And best of all it turns into a BOTTOM TIMER !!! for extended range diving!! It will cover all the bases and is still one hell of a reliable recreational computer IMHO!

HAPPY SHOPPING

I like the Vyper a lot, but it's $100 more. The question is, will it pay off in the long run?
I'm 35, 6'1", 190 pounds, pretty fit. As a new diver, I'm likely to be naturally conservative so a conservative computer is fine with me.

Well folks who are carrying extra weight and/or years would want a conservative computer...

Conservative folks who didn't want to have to pay attention would want a conservative computer...

Even though you are fit you probably want a conservative computer...

Suuntos are conservative computers...
Oceanics are liberal computers...
I don't know where the others fall...

Get the Suunto Vyper... it is very conservative.

Ok, reading all the info, I get most of it as my buddies use a CObra and another uses the Stinger and the Mosquito. So information tables, etc ect that dive coms provide, i can get that, but what on earth is conservative and what is liberal!??!?!?!
Can somebody tell me what that is becoz it sounds like greek to me, and i aint from greece!!!!

Liberal allows greater time before the NDL
Conservative allows less time before the NDL

An Aeris Savant is a very liberal computer....
Savant = learned scholar

Thanks Uncle Pug, that clears some doubts. cheerios. By the way I hope to get a mosquito soon ......
