hi guys

so i have decided to go to a backplate wing setup, i am 6ft, 100kg, diving warm waters and travelling with the bpw. only single tank setup. any advice would be much appreciated and of course looking at budget gear.

pretty set on a ally backplate and something around 30 pound of lift. I'm also interested if weight pockets can be placed on the cam bands with this sort of set up?

i had a look at the dris kit for 329 but by the time i get it to my door in australia it works out to be 510 aud.
i have come across this product in australia posted to my door for 540 aud, can anybody recommend this?

Deep BP&W Ally

thank you :) and happy diving

First why 30lb lift. Warm water diving you should not need that much.
Have a look at Express Tech Deluxe
I have the same but using the HOG webbing so no padding and no shoulder clips.
I use the small pockets, I need about 6 to 10 lbs and thats plenty big enough.

i am happy to go 23/24 pound lift if that is suffice, Ill be doing dive master work and was thinking it may hep if i have to help somebody else up to the surface etc. i certainly wasn't going to go more than 30 pound.

the zeagle looked very good, I am interested, will cost me about 450 aud to get to my door where as i can get the hollis ride to my door for 300

Hollis Ride BCD Save 40 Tech Travel BCD | eBay

is there much difference between the two?

i am interested in ally backplate due to the offset of 2 pound in weight, meaning carrying less on my belt, i won't be running pockets.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to put at least some of the weight a bit higher up in pockets on the cam bands. It is nice for your buoyancy. If al weight is on your waist it doesn't help staying horizontal in the water.

Hi,

I chose a similar setup as a DM in tropical waters (Oxycheq 30# wing with Oxycheq Ultralite Travelplate and Hog harness) and was very happy with it.

30# is propably a bit more than needed, but it gives you a bit of a margin if you have to help an overweighted diver, or if you want do dive in colder waters later.

Weight pockets can be put on the cambands, no problem. A stainless steel plate would take a bit more weight of your belt, but of course that's more weight for travelling.

I'm a Zeagle fan but even to me the Ride looks like a better option for you financially.

About the only thing I can see wrong with the Ride potentially is that both dumps are on the left side. With that bungied wing there's a possibility that if it's slightly deflated some are may get trapped between the bungies.

The Express Tech gives you a third dump on the lower right corner of the wing. An Express Tech also has one mid-wing but there's a fabric flap that the bungie goes thru so it doesn't touch the wing.

Deep appears to be an OZ brand - I've never seen an Ally here in the states.

Don't buy a product because it is the lowest cost, buy it because it will meet your needs. From what I have seen of these lower cost 'travel' BCs they are not as robust and don't hold the tank as firmly, hence the tank has not movement on the back. Buying a BC unseen and untried is a challenge.

I have a Sea Sub Icaro tech, has the ally back-pack. Webbing has shoulder clips so it 'conforms' to 'normal' BCs and fits to closer rescue training. It has two cam bands, I have weight pockets on the top band. These pockets can fit to any cam-band. I also has OMS dump-able weight pockets. It has 6 large d-rings. Weight is about 4kgs so it is okay for travel. It has 25Kg lift (55lb) but with the shock cord it performs well, limited drag and no taco.

I also have a Scubapro Knighthawk, I prefer it, it just seams to fit better. This is the challenge with BCs they need to fit well and be comfortable then you diving and control improves.

If you are still looking at the internship, consider what the operator will want. They may not want a fixed harness. Have you done your rescue course yet? This would give an insight into some aspects of gear.
